Chinatown
Yokohama, Japan
Hit a crack in the pavement while my eyes were trained on the contents of a chinese grocery store display window. Ankle
folding in but camera held high, I managed to sustain only minor bruising as I collide first with rubbish bins, then with
the very clean but very solid street.
MGM Grand Casino
Las Vegas, Nevada
USA
Ignoring any and all signs to watch out for slippery places (we're in the desert! I tell myself) I make a spectacular
flop as my feet go out from under me and I slide down the marble steps almost right into the casino. Who says I don't know
how to make an entrance?
The IHOP parking lot
Galveston, Texas
USA
Again, that evil crack in the pavement calls me to earth as I face plant in the parking lot EXIT with a car attempting
to leave as my wife and grandmother watch on in horror. I'm met with a reprieve as the driver realizes his insurance rates
might go up.
Main drag
Creusot, Burgundy
France
For once I was walking down hill on a completely smooth sidewalk when my shoes betrayed me and said "No! We don't want
to leave the ground! Head! Ass! Come join us!" Another face plant though I just managed to get my palms down to keep from
having a flattened nose.
Camber Sands
Rye, Kent
England
Running down to see the waters edge to paddle with the woman who would become my wife. She sprints along and gets to
the water only to find that may yards back I had hit a hole in the sand and gone down like the Hindenberg.
Pooh Bridge
Hundred Acre Wood,
Hartfield, East Sussex
England
After a pilgrimage down to see the bridge made famous by the Winnie the Pooh story and losing at Pooh Sticks
we walked back through the mud and I managed a slip that encased me in mud from the waste down, forcing a quick change of
clothes in the car park as we were on our way to the airport.
Victoria, British Columbia
Canada
We were on a cricket tour. Ok. This time I actually had been drinking. Out with a few of the lads for a ramble
through the local watering holes I managed to stumble on an uneven curb and do a complete dive. No bruises or scrapes, and
I believe that had I been stone cold sober and not so relaxed things might have been different.
Istanbul, Turkey
The Sublime Porte
The sidewalk on the steep hill leading down the back side of the Zeynep Sultan Mosque is a continuos sheet of pavement
except for one small step. One very small step. I managed to hit it, trip, and roll three times ending up flat on my back.
Six people rushed up, dusted me off and asked almost in unison "Are you good sir?!"
Portland, OR
The main post office
I missed my chair. Landed flat on my back in front of two colleagues. Very dignified.
